I. Lý thuyết về thì quá khứ tiếp diễn (Past Continuous)

Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn trong tiếng anh được gọi là Past Continuous hoặc Past Progressive. Bạn học có thể tìm thêm kiến thức mở rộng bằng cách sử dụng 1 trong 2 tên gọi này.

Định nghĩa thì quá khứ tiếp diễn là gì?

Về khái niệm, thì quá khứ tiếp diễn được dùng để diễn tả một hành động, sự việc đang xảy ra xung quanh một thời điểm cụ thể trong quá khứ. Hành động này đã kết thúc và không còn ở hiện tại.

Công thức thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Dưới đây là cấu trúc chung của thì quá khứ tiếp diễn và công thức chi tiết ở mỗi loại câu.

Cấu trúc chung:

Trợ động từ (be) được chia trong thì quá khứ là: was, were

Động từ chính không đổi ở dạng phân từ hiện tại: -ing

Đối với câu phủ định, chúng ta thêm “NOT” giữa trợ động từ và động từ chính.

Trong câu nghi vấn, thay đổi vị trí chủ ngữ và trợ động từ.

Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn dùng để làm gì?

Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn có 4 cách dùng và chúng thường được sử dụng trong các trường hợp:

1. Diễn tả 1 hành động, sự việc đang xảy ra tại 1 thời điểm trong quá khứ. Hành động bắt đầu tại thời điểm đó nhưng không kết thúc ngay mà tiếp diễn đến 1 thời điểm khác.

VD: At 8pm, I was watching TV.

(Lúc 8h tối, tôi đang xem ti vi). 

2. Diễn tả hành động xảy ra đồng thời trong quá khứ.

VD: He was playing football while we were doing homework.

(Anh ta đang chơi đá bóng trong khi chúng tôi làm bài tập).

3. Diễn tả hành động đang xảy ra thì có hành động, sự việc khác xen vào.

VD: When Mary came, I was cooking dinner.

(Khi Mary đến, tôi đang nấu bữa tối).

4. Đề cập hành động được lặp lại nhiều lần trong quá khứ và làm phiền hoặc khiến người khác khó chịu.

VD: He was always forgetting something at home when he went out.

(Anh ta lúc nào cũng quên một vài thứ ở nhà khi anh ta ra ngoài).

Dấu hiệu nhận biết của thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Một số dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ tiếp diễn thông qua cụm trạng từ và từ chỉ thời gian:

• At + giờ + thời gian trong quá khứ. (at 8p.m yesterday,…)

• At this time + thời gian trong quá khứ. (at this time last week, at the moment last month,…)

• In + năm (in 2019, in 2020)

• In the past.

• When (khi) khi diễn tả hành động xen vào.

• While (trong khi) khi nói về hành động xảy ra song song.

Cách chia động từ ở thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Trong cấu trúc thì quá khứ tiếp diễn, bạn học cần chia trợ động từ và động từ chính trong câu. Cụ thể:

Chia trợ động từ theo chủ ngữ chính của câu (đại từ nhân xưng)

Quy tắc thêm “-ing” khi chia động từ chính 

Những động từ không chia ở thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Điểm chung các động từ không dùng ở thì các thì tiếp diễn (non-continuous verb) là nhóm từ chỉ cảm giác, trạng thái, nhận thức (tri thức, sở thích), sở hữu. Có thể phân thành 5 nhóm từ không chia (không dùng) ở thì hiện tại tiếp diễn gồm:

Nhóm giác quan: taste, smell, hear,...

Nhóm chỉ tình trạng: appear, seem, sound,...

Nhóm sở hữu: have/has, belong to, contain, possess,...

Nhóm sở thích: like, love, hate, dislike, desire, wish,...

Nhóm tri thức: know, understand, believe,...
