1. Định nghĩa đại từ chỉ định
Đại từ chỉ định (tiếng Anh: Demonstrative Pronouns) là những từ sử dụng để chỉ người hoặc vật, dựa vào khoảng giữa người nói đến đối tượng họ đang muốn nhắc đến.
Ví dụ:
This is my class’s new friend.
Đây là bạn mới của lớp tôi.
Those are my children. They are very cute, aren’t they.
Đó là những đứa con của tôi. Chúng rất dễ thương phải không.
2. Vị trí của đại từ chỉ định trong câu
Do là một loại đại từ nên trong cấu trúc Tiếng Anh, đại từ chỉ định có thể giữ các vị trí, vai trò sau:
Vị trí của đại từ chỉ định trong câu
Đại từ chỉ định làm chủ ngữ
Ví dụ:
This is my car.
Đây là ô tô của tôi.
That is my best friend.
Đó là bạn thân của tôi.
Đại từ chỉ định làm tân ngữ
Ví dụ:
I’ll never forget those.
Tôi sẽ không bao giờ quên những điều đó.
I didn’t ask for this.
Tôi không yêu cầu điều này.
Đại từ chỉ định đứng sau giới từ (trong cụm giới từ)
Ví dụ:

3. Cách dùng đại từ chỉ định
Có tất cả 4 đại từ chỉ định trong tiếng Anh, đó là: this, that, these, those.

3.1. Đại từ chỉ định This and These
Cách dùng các đại từ chỉ định this và these như sau:
Nói về người hoặc vật ở khoảng cách gần với người nói
Ví dụ:
I like this bag.
Tôi thích cái túi này.
These are colorful flowers.
Đây là những bông hoa nhiều màu sắc.
Dùng để giới thiệu một ai đó
This is Mike.
Đây là Mike.
These are my parents.
Đây là bố mẹ tôi.
Chỉ sự việc sắp được nói đến

3.2. Đại từ chỉ định That and Those
Tương tự như This và these, đại từ chỉ định That và those cũng có 3 cách dùng:
Nói về người hoặc vật ở khoảng cách xa so với người nói
Ví dụ:
Look over there at the woman wearing the flower dress. That is my mom.
Nhìn sang người phụ nữ mặc váy hoa đằng kia. Đó là mẹ tôi.
Those are Mike’s hats.
Đó là những chiếc mũ của Mike.
Khi muốn xác định hay nhận dạng người nào
Ví dụ:
Is that Anna?
Có phải Anna đó không?
Are those the children of Mr. and Mrs. Smith?
Đó có phải là con của ông bà Smith không?
Nói đến sự việc ở trong quá khứ hoặc vừa mới xảy ra.
Ví dụ:
That is too bad. It will get me blamed.
