I. Lý thuyết Đại từ quan hệ trong tiếng Anh

1. Đại từ quan hệ trong tiếng Anh (relative pronouns) là gì?

Relative pronouns có nghĩa là những đại từ quan hệ. 

Đại từ quan hệ trong tiếng Anh là các đại từ dùng để nối mệnh đề quan hệ với mệnh đề chính trong câu. Ngoài chức năng làm đại từ, chúng còn có chức năng làm liên từ. 

(Chú thích: Mệnh đề quan hệ hay còn gọi là mệnh đề tính từ, tiếng Anh là relative clause, được bắt đầu với một đại từ quan hệ. Mệnh đề quan hệ dùng để giải thích rõ hơn về danh từ hoặc cụm danh từ trước đó.) 

Xem ví dụ sau để giải thích rõ hơn về đại từ quan hệ: 

Ex1: The person who phoned me last night is my father. (Người mà đã gọi điện thoại cho tôi đêm qua là bố của tôi.) 

-> Who là đại từ quan hệ, dùng trong mệnh đề quan hệ là “who phoned me last night”  (mệnh đề quan hệ này làm rõ nghĩa cho đối tượng “the person”) 

Ex2: It’s a story which every child will enjoy.

-> Which: Đại từ quan hệ (vai trò như tân ngữ trong câu) 

Có 3 đại từ quan hệ chính là 

• Who

• Which 

• That 

Trong đó đại từ quan hệ Who có hai dạng khác là: Whom (dạng tân ngữ) và Whose (dạng sở hữu) 

2. Chức năng của đại từ quan hệ trong tiếng Anh

Các đại từ quan hệ đóng vai trò làm chủ ngữ, tân ngữ hoặc làm đại từ sở hữu trong một mệnh đề quan hệ trong câu. Riêng trường hợp làm đại từ sở hữu, chỉ có một đại từ là “Whose”. 

Tóm tắt chức năng của các đại từ quan hệ trong bảng dưới đây. 

Đại từ quan hệ chức năng làm chủ ngữ 

Khi đại từ quan hệ làm chủ ngữ, theo sau nó là một động từ. 

Ví dụ: It was my husband who broke the car door. (Chính chồng tôi đã làm hỏng cửa xe ô tô.) 

-> Đại từ quan hệ “who” giữ vai trò làm chủ ngữ trong mệnh đề quan hệ “who broke the car door”, bổ sung nghĩa cho danh từ phía trước “my husband”. 

Đại từ quan hệ chức năng làm tân ngữ 

Đại từ quan hệ làm tân ngữ, theo sau đó là một mệnh đề S + V. Các đại từ Who, whom, which, that đều có thể đóng vai trò làm tân ngữ trong câu. 

Ví dụ:  

The people who (whom) I phoned last night are my teachers. (Người mà tôi đã gọi tối qua là những giáo viên của tôi.) 

-> Đại từ quan hệ ‘Who” giữ vai trò làm tân ngữ trong mệnh đề quan hệ ‘who I phoned last night”, miêu tả danh từ chỉ người phía trước “the people”. 

Tương tự ta có: 

The car which (that) I drive is old. (Chiếc xe mà tôi lái đã cũ.) 

* Lưu ý: Đại từ quan hệ khi đóng vai trò làm tân ngữ có thể được lược bỏ trong mệnh đề xác định (hay còn gọi là mệnh đề giới hạn.) 

Vd: She gave me a book which she bought yesterday -> She gave me a book she bought yesterday. (Đại từ quan hệ which đã bị lược bỏ.) 

Đại từ quan hệ chức năng là đại từ sở hữu 

Đại từ quan hệ đóng vai trò sở hữu sẽ đứng trước một danh từ. 

Vd: This is the girl whose notes I borrowed. (Đây là cô gái mà tôi đã mượn ghi chú.) 

3. Cách dùng các đại từ quan hệ trong tiếng Anh

Các đại từ quan hệ được sử dụng trong mệnh đề quan hệ xác định (defining relative clauses) và mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định (non-defining relative clauses). 

(Chú ý: Xem thế nào là mệnh đề quan hệ xác định và mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định ở phần tiếp theo.) 

Ngoài các đại từ trên chúng ta còn có hai đại từ quan hệ được gọi là trạng từ quan hệ đó là When và Where 

Trạng từ quan hệ when thay thế danh từ trước đó liên quan đến thời gian 

Vd: I know a restaurant where the food is excellent. 

Trạng từ quan hệ where miêu tả danh từ trước đó liên quan đến nơi chốn 

Vd: There isn’t a day when I don’t feel rushed off my feet.

4. Mệnh đề xác định và mệnh đề không xác định

Mệnh đề quan hệ (relative clauses) bao gồm hai loại mệnh đề quan hệ xác định (Defining Relative Clause) và mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định (Non-defining Relative Clause). 

Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định bổ sung nghĩa cho danh từ, cụm danh từ trước đó và không thể lược bỏ trong câu. Nếu bỏ đi câu sẽ không có nghĩa rõ ràng. Có mệnh đề này, người đọc mới có thể hiểu rõ nghĩa. 

Vd: I’ve never understood people who eat raw fish. (Tôi không thể nào hiểu được những người ăn cá sống)

-> “who eat raw fish” là mệnh đề quan hệ xác định, mô tả thêm cho danh từ “people” 

Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định dùng để bổ sung ý nghĩa cho một danh từ hoặc cả một mệnh đề trước đó của câu. Mệnh đề này có thể lược bỏ mà ý nghĩa của câu vẫn đầy đủ. 

Trong câu có mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định, ta dùng dấu phẩy để ngăn cách mệnh đề chính và phụ 

Vd: Nam, who is sitting in front of the church, is following me. (Nam, người đang ngồi trước nhà thờ, đang theo dõi tôi.) 

Vậy chúng ta cần phân biệt hai loại mệnh đề này để từ đó sử dụng đại từ quan hệ được chính xác nhất. 

5. Lưu ý khi sử dụng đại từ quan hệ 

Một số lưu ý cần nhớ khi sử dụng đại từ quan hệ đó là: 

1. Không dùng đại từ quan hệ “that” khi phía trước nó có dấu phẩy “,” (trong mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định) hoặc có một giới từ. 

Ví dụ: This is my car, that I bought 1 year ago. -> SAI 

2. Trường hợp bắt buộc phải dùng “that”: Khi danh từ mà “that” thay thế gồm hai đối tượng trở lên là người và vật. 

Vd: The man and his dog that… 

3. Các đại từ quan hệ có thể làm chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ trong mệnh đề quan hệ, vì thế không thể lặp đại một chủ ngữ, hoặc tân ngữ trước đó. 

Vd: This is the house that Jack built it.

(that là đại từ quan hệ làm tân ngữ cho động từ built, nên ta không dùng “it” ở cuối câu.) 

4. Một lưu ý cuối cùng là trong câu có sử dụng đại từ quan hệ, đôi khi ta có thể lược bỏ chúng (rút gọn) đi mà không làm câu sai ngữ pháp. Để biết khi nào có thể lược bỏ đại từ quan hệ -> Hãy đọc thêm bài viết này:
