I. Lý thuyết
1. Other và cách dùng Other
Other có nghĩa của một tính từ: người hoặc vật thêm vào hoặc những điều đã được nêu lên, ngụ ý trước đó.
Ví dụ: Some students like learning music, other students don’t. (Một số sinh viên thích học âm nhạc, một số khác thì không.)
Xét về nghĩa, Another và Other đều được dùng để mô tả về người/vật khác. Tuy nhiên, other thường được sử dụng với danh từ đếm được số nhiều hoặc danh từ không đếm được. Có 4 trường hợp áp dụng Other phổ biến là:
Other đóng vai trò là một từ hạn định, thường đứng trước danh từ không đếm được và danh từ đếm được số nhiều.
Ví dụ:
– The first page has general information about the writer. Other information is in the second and third page. (Trang thứ nhất chứa những thông tin về tác giả. Những thông tin khác nằm ở trang thứ hai và thứ ba.)
– Some students are from Vietnam, other students are from Japan. (Một số sinh viên đến từ Việt Nam, số khác đến từ Nhật Bản.)
– Do you have this dress in other sizes? (Bạn có cái váy này mà size khác không?).
Other đóng vai trò là đại từ, khi sử dụng trong câu other sẽ ở dạng số nhiều là others thay thế cho other ones hoặc other + danh từ số nhiều.
Ví dụ:
I don’t want these bottles, I want others. (Tôi không muốn những cái chai này, tôi muốn những cái khác).
If you don’t like these books, let’s ask for others. (Nếu bạn không thích những cuốn sách này, hãy hỏi những quyển khác nhé.)
Other + từ xác định (determiners) + danh từ số ít (singular nouns)
Khi sử dụng cách dùng này, chúng ta sẽ bắt gặp thường xuyên dạng đặc biệt của other là “the other + danh từ số ít” mang nghĩa cái còn lại, người còn lại.
Ví dụ:
I have two close friends. One is English teacher and the other is a doctor. (Tôi có 2 người bạn thân. Một người là giáo viên tiếng Anh, người còn lại là bác sĩ.)
Anna is working in the K.M company. My other sister is still at school. (Anna đang làm việc ở công ty K.M company. Người em gái còn lại của tôi vẫn đang đi học.)
He got 10 marks in the final test. No other student has ever achieved that. (Anh ấy đạt được 10 điểm trong bài kiểm tra cuối. Chưa hề có học sinh nào đạt được điều đó trước đây.)
Bên cạnh the other miêu tả một vật/người còn lại, chúng ta còn sử dụng cụm từ the others = the other + danh từ đếm được số nhiều để diễn tả về nhiều vật/nhiều người còn lại.
Ví dụ: I have 3 beautiful hats, one of which is red, the others are yellow. (Tôi có 3 chiếc mũ rất đẹp, 1 trong số chúng màu đỏ, những cái còn lại màu vàng.)
Other + ones
Tương tự như “another one”, “other ones” được sử dụng để thay thế cho danh từ hoặc cụm danh từ đã được đề cập đến trước đó và không muốn lặp lại chúng nữa.
Ví dụ: We don’t like these books. We want other ones, please. (Chúng tôi không thích những cuốn sách này. Chúng tôi muốn những cuốn khác, làm ơn.)
2. Another và cách dùng Another
Another và cách dùng Another
Another được sử dụng trong câu mang nghĩa là khác hay đề cập tới một cái gì đó có tính chất “thêm vào” một cái khác. Có 3 cách sử dụng another như sau:
Another (adj) + Noun (số ít): thêm 1 người, 1 vật khác tương tự
Ví dụ: Would you like another drink ? (Bạn có muốn thêm một cốc nữa không?)
Another (đại từ ): Khi “another” đóng vai trò là đại từ sẽ không có danh từ đằng sau và vẫn mang nghĩa tương tự như trên.
Ví dụ: This book is boring. Give me another. (Quyển sách này chán quá. Đưa tôi quyển khác đi.)
Another: Được dùng để diễn tả về thời gian, khoảng cách, tiền bạc ở số ít và số nhiều với nghĩa thêm nữa.
Ví dụ: What will you gain in another 2 years? (Bạn sẽ đạt được gì trong 3 năm nữa?)
3. The other và cách dùng The other
Cách sử dụng The other
The other được sử dụng trong câu để mang ý nghĩa mô tả cái còn lại, người còn lại…
Ví dụ: I have three close friends. Two of whom are teachers. The other (friend) is an engineer. (Tôi có ba người bạn thân. Hai trong số họ là giáo viên. Người còn lại là một kỹ sư.)
The other được sử dụng như một từ xác định. The other + danh từ số ít: cái còn lại/người còn lại,…
Ví dụ: This laptop here is new. The other laptop is about 7 years old. (Cái laptop ở đây mới. Còn cái còn lại thì đã khoảng 7 năm tuổi rồi.)
The other + danh từ số nhiều: diễn đạt những cái còn lại, những người còn lại trong một nhóm có nhiều thứ/nhiều người
Ví dụ: There are 5 books on the table. One book is mine and the others is yours. (Có 5 quyển sách trên bàn. 1 quyển là của tôi, số còn lại là sách của bạn.)
The other thường được sử dụng như một đại từ (pronoun)
Cũng giống “another” và “other”, chúng ta hoàn toàn có thể sử dụng “the other” như một đại từ, thay thế cho những danh từ hoặc cụm danh từ đã được đề cập trước đó
Ví dụ: She had a book in one hand and a laptop in the other. (Một tay cô ấy cầm sách, tay còn lại thì cầm máy tính.)
Trong tiếng Anh the others thường được sử dụng để thay thế cho cụm từ “the other people”.
Ví dụ: Some of them want to go shopping and the others prefer to watching TV. (Một số người trong bọn họ muốn đi mua sắm, còn những người khác thì lại muốn xem phim hơn.)
