I. Lý thuyết
1. Tổng hợp kiến thức về cấu trúc Prefer
Chúng ta sẽ dùng cấu trúc Prefer to V hoặc Prefer Ving để diễn tả thích làm việc gì hơn. Để hiểu rõ hơn về hai cấu trúc này, hãy tham khảo qua phần thông tin bên dưới nhé!
Prefer something to something
E.g.: I prefer this T-shirt to the one you gave me yesterday.
(Em thích cái áo này hơn cái anh đã đưa em ngày hôm qua)
Prefer V-ing to V-ing
E.g.: I prefer doing the homework to hanging out with my friends.
(Tôi thích làm bài tập hơn là ra ngoài chơi với bạn)
2. Tổng hợp kiến thức về cấu trúc Would prefer
Cũng giống như Prefer, cấu trúc Would prefer cũng được sử dụng khi muốn diễn đạt thích làm việc gì hơn. Tuy nhiên Would prefer được dùng trong bối cảnh trang trọng, còn prefer thì mang nghĩa thân mật hơn.
Would prefer + to V + rather than + Vinf/ to V
Cấu trúc này được sử dụng để diễn đạt khi bạn muốn làm điều gì đó hơn.
E.g.:
I would prefer to write a letter by hand rather than use email.
(Tôi thích viết thư bằng tay hơn là sử dụng thư điện tử)
Would prefer to V
Cấu trúc này cũng được sử dụng để diễn tả thích làm việc gì hơn.
E.g.:
Do you want to go to the cinema? – Well, I would prefer to go to the zoo.
(Bạn có muốn đi xem phim không? – Chà, tôi thích đi sở thú hơn)
3. Tổng hợp kiến thức về cấu trúc Would Rather
Cấu trúc would rather ở thì hiện tại
Cấu trúc 1:

Cũng tương tự với cấu trúc Would prefer to V, cấu trúc này cũng mang nghĩa là thích gì hơn.
E.g.: Mary would rather eat out tomorrow.
(Jennie thích ra ngoài ăn hơn vào ngày mai)
Do you want to walk around? – Well, I would rather ride on a bike.
(Em có muốn đi dạo xung quanh không?” – “Chà, em muốn đi bằng xe đạp hơn)
*Lưu ý:
Khi muốn thành lập câu phủ định với cấu trúc would rather ta đặt “not” sau would rather: S + would rather + not + Vinf/ to V
E.g.:
Jennie would rather not eat out tomorrow.
(Jennie không thích ăn bên ngoài vào ngày mai hơn)
Do you want to walk around? – Well, I would rather not walk around.
(Em có muốn đi dạo không?” – “Chà, em không muốn đi dạo đâu)

Chúng ta sử dụng cấu trúc này khi muốn diễn đạt ý muốn thích làm điều gì đó hơn điều gì khác.
E.g.: I’d rather go to the cafe tonight than go to the movies.
(Tối nay tôi thích đến quán cà phê hơn là đi xem phim)
Jennie would rather go on a trip tomorrow than today.
(Jennie thích đi du lịch vào ngày mai hơn là hôm nay)
Cấu trúc would rather ở thể quá khứ

Cấu trúc này được sử dụng khi chúng ta muốn/ không muốn người khác làm một điều gì đó hơn là một việc khác.
E.g.: Should I stay in a hotel tonight? – I’d rather you stayed here with us.
(Tôi có nên trú ở khách sạn tối nay không? – Tôi muốn anh ở lại đây với chúng tôi hơn)
Shall I tell them about Hoa? – No, I’d rather they didn’t know anything about her.
(Tôi nói cho họ biết về Hoa nhé? – Không, tôi muốn họ không biết gì về cô ấy thì hơn)
*Lưu ý:
Ở cấu trúc trên, chúng ta dùng động từ ở thì quá khứ (came, did, …) nhưng những câu trong ví dụ lại mang nghĩa là hiện tại hoặc tương lai.
Khi muốn thành lập câu phủ định với cấu trúc này, ta dùng; Would rather somebody didn’t V.
E.g.:
I would rather you didn’t tell her anything I said to you.
(Tôi không muốn anh nói cho cô ấy bất cứ những gì tôi đã nói)
Hãy so sánh hai ví dụ dưới đây:
I’d rather go out now.
(Tôi muốn ra ngoài ngay bây giờ)
I’d rather you went out now. (không dùng ‘I’d rather you go out now’)
(Anh muốn em ra ngoài ngay lúc này)
