I. Lý thuyết Giới từ trong Tiếng Anh

1. Định nghĩa

Giới từ là những từ chỉ thời gian, vị trí... chỉ sự liên quan giữa các từ khác trong cụm, trong câu văn. Giới từ được sử dụng trong câu với vai trò gắn kết các từ, cụm từ để giúp bạn hiểu rõ hơn câu văn, ngữ cảnh.

Giới từ được sử dụng trong câu với quy định riêng mà khi học theo từng loại cụ thể dưới đây, bạn cần chú ý để áp dụng đúng.

Ví dụ: I was born in 2000 : Tôi được sinh ra vào năm 2000 

Câu này có giới từ là in, và bạn không thể bỏ từ này đi được nếu muốn câu có nghĩa đúng.

Giới từ là một phần quan trọng của ngữ pháp

2. Vị trí

Giới từ trong câu được đặt ở các vị trí:

Sau tobe - trước danh từ:

• I will stay in Vietnam for 2 years: Tôi sẽ ở lại Việt Nam khoảng 2 năm.

Sau động từ ( có thể đứng trực tiếp sau động từ hoặc sau động từ + 1 từ khác)

• I live in Hanoi: Tôi sống ở Hà Nội

• She often go to bed at 11p.m: Cô ấy thường đi ngủ vào 11h tối.

Sau tính từ:

• He is very worried about her health: Anh ấy rất lo lắng về sức khỏe của cô ấy.

3. Các loại giới từ thường gặp 

3.1. Giới từ chỉ thời gian

• IN (trong, vào ngày/ vào dịp) được dùng để chỉ các buổi trong ngày, tháng, năm, mùa, thập niên, thế kỷ hoặc khoảng thời gian ở tương lai.

Ví dụ: in the afternoon, in October, in 2000, in the summer, in the 21st century, in the Middle Age, in two hours.

• AT (vào lúc) được dùng để chỉ giờ, thời điểm cố định hoặc các kỳ nghỉ.

Ví dụ: at 10 o’clock, at night, at bedtime, at dawn, at Christmas, at the moment, at present, at the same time, at that time, at first.

• ON (vào) được dùng để chỉ ngày trong tuần, ngày tháng trong năm, ngày trong kỳ nghỉ hoặc các buổi trong ngày cụ thể.

Ví dụ: on Sunday, on 12th February, on Christmas Day, on Tuesday morning, on my birthday

(On time: đúng giờ)

3. 2. Giới từ chỉ nơi chốn 

• AT (tại) được dùng để chỉ vị trí tại một điểm.

Ví dụ: at home, at school, at the airport, at the shop, at the beginning/ end, at the front/ back

• IN (trong, ở trong) được dùng để chỉ vị trí trong một diện tích, một không gian; dùng trước tên đường, tên thị trấn, thành phố, quốc gia, miền, phương hướng hoặc dùng với các phương tiện đi lại bằng xe hơi (car).

Ví dụ: in a hall, in the countryside, in the universe, in Vietnam, in Hanoi, in a bus

• ON (trên, ở trên) được dùng để chỉ vị trí trên bề mặt, số tầng trong một tòa nhà hoặc dùng với một số phương tiện đi lại.

Ví dụ: on the board, on the ground, on the second floor, on foot

3.3. Giới từ chỉ sự chuyển động

• To (đến)

Ví dụ: He goes to school by bus.

• From … To (từ … đến)

Ví dụ: How far is it from your school to your house?

• Through (xuyên qua)

Ví dụ: They walked through the forest.

• Across (ngang qua)

Ví dụ: The children ran straight across in front of our car.

• Round/ Around (xung quanh)

Ví dụ: The cat walks around the the large circle.

• Along (dọc theo)

Ví dụ: They walked along the riverside.

• Up (lên)/ Down (xuống)

Ví dụ: The price of petroleum has went up.

• Toward (Towards) (về phía)

Ví dụ: People have different opinions towards Tom’s behavior.

Giới từ chỉ chuyển động

4. Hình thức của giới từ

Ở trên là những giới từ thường gặp theo đa dạng hình thức khác nhau. Có đến 6 hình thức giới từ được sử dụng hiện nay mà bạn có thể phân biệt như sau.

- Giới từ đơn: chỉ có một chữ như in, on, at...

- Giới từ đôi: có hai từ đơn ghép lại với nhau như into, within...

- Giới từ kép: giới từ ghép thêm a hoặc be ở trước như about, among, beside...

- Giới từ do phân từ: According to (tùy theo), excepting = except (ngoại trừ)...

- Cụm từ như giới từ: Giới từ này là cả một cụm từ: Because of (bởi vì), In the place of (thay vì)...

- Giới từ trá hình: Giới từ này đi theo cụm, thường ẩn trong cụm từ như At 10 o’clock (o’ = of): Lúc 10 giờ

5. Những sai lầm thường gặp khi sử dụng giới từ

5.1. Áp đặt suy luận từ từ tương đồng

Bạn gặp một động từ là think đi với giới từ là think about - nghĩ về điều gì đó.

Đến khi bạn gặp từ remember và bạn điền "nhớ về" là remember about là không đúng. Từ này không cần giới từ about nữa.

5.2. Không nhận ra sự khác biệt khi thấy cùng một danh từ

Chúng ta có câu: in the night và thấy ...a hot summer night và bạn điền từ in vào nhưng thực tế đoạn này là phải điền on chứ không phải in bởi nhắc đến một đêm cụ thể chứ không chỉ chung.

Vì thế, hãy chú ý sử dụng đúng giới từ theo câu được cho, đọc kỹ để tránh sai sót.

5.3. Ảnh hưởng từ tiếng Việt

Xu hướng dịch từ tiếng Việt vẫn là ảnh hưởng không nhỏ đến người học. Kể cả dùng giới từ.

Trong tiếng Việt có:  cảm thấy có lỗi với ai đó - bạn dùng with sau động từ sorry hay apologize nhưng sự thật phải khác.

Trong tiếng Anh là feel sorry for  / apologize to nhé!

Chú ý kỹ các điều này nha!
