Would rather là cấu trúc quen thuộc thường gặp trong các bài tập tiếng Anh, vậy cách dùng would rather như thế nào? Cùng tìm hiểu các công thức would rather cụ thể dưới đây nhé!
1.1. Cấu trúc Would rather… (Thích cái gì/ Muốn cái gì) – sử dụng ở thì hiện tại hoặc tương lai
Cấu trúc would rather có thể được sử dụng để diễn tả mong muốn của người nói về một điều gì đó ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai. Cách dùng này thường được sử dụng trong các tình huống giao tiếp tiếng Anh trang trọng hoặc trong văn viết.
Khẳng định (+) : S + would rather (‘d rather) + V ( nguyên thể)
Phủ định (-) : S + would rather (‘d rather) + not + V ( nguyên thể)
Nghi vấn (?) : Would + S + rather + V ( nguyên thể) ?
Cấu trúc Would rather
Ví dụ:
I would rather stay at home. (Tôi thích/ muốn ở nhà)
They would rather not eat pizza. (Họ không thích/ muốn ăn pizza)
She would rather not do homework. (Cô ấy không thích/ muốn làm bài tập về nhà)
Linda would rather not sing “Lucky” song. (Linda không thích/ muốn hát bài hát “Lucky”)
Would they rather go to the zoo? (Bạn có thích/ muốn đi sở thú không?)
1.2. Cấu trúc would rather ở thì quá khứ
Cấu trúc ‘would rather’ có thể được sử dụng để diễn tả mong muốn, nuối tiếc của người nói về một điều gì đó đã xảy ra trong quá khứ.
Công thức:
Khẳng định (+): S + would rather + have + V3
Phủ định (-): S + would rather (not) + have + V3
Nghi vấn (?): Would + S + rather + have + V3
Ví dụ:
She would rather have spent the money on a holiday. (The money wasn’t spent on a holiday.)
I’d rather have seen it at the cinema than on DVD. (I saw the film on DVD.)
I would rather not have bought this shirt.
1.3. Cấu trúc “Would rather…than” (Thích cái gì hơn)
“Would rather than’’ diễn tả thích cái gì hơn cái gì.
Cấu trúc “Would rather…than” – thì hiện tại
S + would rather (not)+ N / V ( nguyên thể) + than +…
Ví dụ:
She’d rather go to class today than tomorrow. (Cô ấy thích đến lớp hôm nay hơn đến lớp ngày mai)
Cấu trúc “Would rather…than” – thì quá khứ
S + would rather (not) + have + V (PII) + than …
Khi dùng cấu trúc “would rather than” ở thì quá khứ, sau “would rather” là “Have + V (PII)”, với thể phủ định thêm “not” trước “have”.
Ví dụ:
I would rather have eaten dark chocolate than milk chocolate. (Tôi đã thích ăn socola đen hơn socola sữa)
Cấu trúc ‘Would rather that” (Mong muốn làm gì)
=> thể hiện sự mong muốn ai làm gì đó ở thời điểm hiện tại. Động từ để dạng nguyên thể, câu phủ định thêm “not” trước động từ
S1 + would rather (that) + S2 + V(nguyên thể)…
Ví dụ:
I would rather that you talk to me. (Tôi mong rằng bạn nói chuyện với tôi)
I’d rather that you not go to her birthday party. (Tôi mong rằng bạn không tới dự sinh nhật của cô ấy)
1.4. Công thức would rather than và would rather or
Để thể hiện sự ưu tiên, yêu thích một việc gì đó hơn một việc khác, ta có thể sử dụng would rather than và would rather or. Đây cũng là cách dùng phổ biến của cấu trúc would rather trong tiếng Anh.
Ví dụ:
Would you rather eat dinner out than cook dinner tonight?
She would rather haven’t eat that chocolate cake.
Would you rather eat here or go out?
Would you rather study or watch TV?
2. Cấu trúc Would rather với hai chủ ngữ
2.1. Cấu trúc “Would rather that” – câu giả định đối lập với thực tế hiện tại
Động từ được chia ở thì quá khứ. Đặc biệt tobe luôn là “were” ở tất cả các ngôi.
S1 + would rather (that) + S2 + V (quá khứ)…
Ví dụ:
Jim’d rather that his parents gave him a new toy car. (Jim mong rằng bố mẹ anh ấy tặng anh ấy một chiếc ô tô mới)
Jake would rather that he didn’t work as a teacher. (Jake mong rằng anh ấy không làm giáo viên)
Harry would rather it were summer now. (Harry mong rằng bây giờ là mùa hè)
2.2. Cấu trúc “Would rather that” – câu giả định đối lập với thực tế hiện tại
Động từ được chia ở thì quá khứ hoàn thành.
S1 + would rather (that) + S2 + had V(PII)…
Ví dụ:
She would rather that her best friend had gone to the cinema yesterday. (Cô ấy muốn bạn thân nhất đến rạp chiếu phim ngày hôm qua)
He would rather that Bob hadn’t traveled to Ha Noi last week. (Anh ấy muốn Bon không du lịch đến Hà Nội tuần trước)
Note: Trong giao tiếp thường ngày, bạn có thể dùng “Wish” thay thế cho “Would rather that”.
3. Dạng viết tắt của would rather
Thông thường, would rather sẽ được viết tắt (trừ trong các văn bản trang trọng).

She would = She’d
We would = We’d
