WAYS OF SOCIALIZING

To attract someone’s attention so that we  (31)…….. speak to that person, we can use either verbal or non-verbal forms of communication. Let us look at non-verbal communication in English. Probably the (32)…….. common way of attracting someone’s attention is by waving. For example, if we are at a noisy party and see a friend come in the door about 20 metres away, we might raise our hand and wave to her as a signal that we see her.

But how hard can we wave in a situation like this? Suppose you are (33)… …. the airport, and you see your brother get off the plane and begin walking toward you. If you are excited, you might jump up and down and wave as hard as you can …(34)…… his attention. This is the instance where big, obvious non-verbal signals are appropriate.

There are, however, some social situations where smaller non-verbal signals are more appropriate. In a restaurant, for example, if we want to attract the (35)………….of our waiter, we have several choices. We can wait until he passes near us, catch his eye, and nod slightly to let him know we would like him (36)….…… to our table. Or we can raise our hand slightly to show that we need assistance. We do not whistle or clap our hands to get the person’s attention. That is considered impolite and even rude.

In most social situations where some informality ……… allowed, a brief raise of the hand and a small wave is fine. For instance, if you are walking across the schoolyard and see your teacher approaching you, a small friendly wave to attract his or her attention is appropriate.

Once you’ve got your friend’s attention, you shouldn’t point at the person or thing you want her to look at. A slight nod will do. Pointing at someone is usually (35)………….. rude. Of course, there are times when pointing is (39)……….. acceptable, such as when a teacher wants to get someone’s attention in class. The teacher often points (40)……. the student and says, “David, would you read the next sentence, please?” Pointing here is not impolite; it’s simply a way to get someone’s attention.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A,B,C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the numbered blanks from 36 to 42.

When people plan to marry, they expect to find in their partner not only a lover but a friend also. They find a person with whom they can share their opinions, their emotions, thoughts and fears. In marriage we are looking for a partner who will be able to understand our values, our likes and dislikes.

If a man and a woman are born and raised in the same country, most likely they are familiar with the same songs, movies, jokes, books and life in general. They basically have the same roots. In the case of a western man and foreign woman family everything is more complicated and requires much more patience and understanding from both spouses. On one hand each of the partners has an opportunity to learn a great deal about the other's country, culture, traditions and life styles which can be very interesting. On the other hand it can be very disappointing if there is the inability to understand your partner's excitements and frustrations. For example, you are watching the television and suddenly you see a famous actor or singer, or other type of an artist whose name you have grown up with. Maybe this artist was an idol for your parents and the music of this artist was often played in your house when you were a child. Unfortunately you realize that your wife is unable to understand your feelings because she has no idea who this artist is. Her eyes are absolutely empty because she has never even heard the song before. You feel rather disappointed! Remember that your wife has the same situation with you. You do not know her country's songs, her country's famous actors, her books. She has her own memories and in actuality, for her, everything is much more difficult than it is for you. At least, you live in your own country where everybody can understand you. She lives in completely strange surroundings, where she has nobody to share her feelings with, except you.

Do some research and learn about your wife's country, culture and lifestyles. Talk with her, ask her questions, get to know what songs she likes, what movies and books are of interest to her. The Internet will give you a great opportunity to find anything! Tell her about your country's culture, let her listen to the music that you like, rent a movie for her that left you with great impression. Let her understand you better through the things that you like. Patience and time will help you to fight cultural differences.

B. Spouses who are from different cultures need more patience and understanding in their marriage than those who have the same roots.

C. Spouses who have the same roots go not share anything together.

D. Spouses who are from different cultures can never share anything together.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A,B,C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the numbered blanks from 43 to 50.

The principle of use and disuse states that those parts of organisms’ bodies that are used grown larger. Those parts that are not tend to wither away. It is an observed fact that when you exercise particular muscles, they grow. Those that are never used diminish. By examining a man's body, we can tell which muscles he uses and which he doesn't. We may even be able to guess his profession or his reaction. Enthusiasts of the "body- building" cult make use of the principle of use and disuse to "build" their bodies, almost like a piece of sculpture, into whatever unnatural shape is demanded by fashion in this peculiar minority culture. Muscles are not the only parts of the body that respond to use in this kind of way. Walk barefoot and you acquire harder skin on your soles. It is easy to tell a farmer from a bank teller by looking at their hands alone. The farmer's hands are horny, hardened by long exposure to rough work. The teller's hands are relatively soft.

The principle of use and disuse enables animals to become better at the job of surviving in their world, progressively better during their lifetime as a result of living in that world. Humans, through direct exposure to sunlight, or lack of it, develop a skin color which equips them better to survive in the particular local conditions.

Too much sunlight is dangerous. Enthusiastic sunbathers with very fair skins are susceptible to skin cancer. Too little sunlight, on the other hand, leads to vitamin-D deficiency and rickets. The brown pigment melanin which is synthesized under the influence of sunlight, makes a screen to protect the underlying  tissues   from the    harmful effects of further sunlight. If a suntanned person moves to a less sunny climate, the melanin disappears, and the body is able to benefit from what little sun there is. This can be represented as an instance of the principle of use and disuse: skin goes brown when it is "used", and fades to white when it is not.

Question 46:What does the passage mainly discuss?

      A. How the principles of use and disuse change people's concepts of themselves.

Read the passage below and choose one correct answer for each question from question 39 to  45:

Insects' lives are very short and they have many enemies, but they must survive long enough to breed and perpetuate their kind. The less insect-like they look, the better their chance of survival. To look "inedible" by resembling or imitating plants is a deception widely practiced by insects. Mammals rarely use this type of camouflage, but many fish and invertebrates do.

The stick caterpillar is well named. It is hardly distinguishable from a brown or green twig. This caterpillar is quite common and can be found almost anywhere in North America. It is also called "measuring worm" or "inchworm." It walks by arching its body, than stretching out and grasping the branch with its front feet then looping its body again to bring the hind feet forward. When danger threatens, the stick caterpillar stretches its body away from the branch at an angle and remains rigid and still, like a twig, until the danger has passed.

Walking sticks, or stick insects, do not have to assume a rigid, twig-like pose to find protection; they look like inedible twigs in any position. There are many kinds of walking sticks, ranging in size form the few inches of the North American variety to some tropical species that may be over a foot long. When at rest their front legs are stretched out. heightening their camouflage. Some of the tropical species are adorned with spines or ridges. imitating the thorny bushes or trees in which they live.

Leaves also seem to be a favorite object for insects to imitate. Many butterflies can suddenly disappear from view by folding their wings and sitting quietly among the foliage that they resemble.

A. extreme weather conditions                   B. other creatures competing for space

C. creatures that eat insects                       D. inedible insects

Câu 41: According to the passage, how does the stick caterpillar make itself look like a twig?

A. By changing the color of its skin             B. By holding its body stiff and motionless

C. By laying its body flat against a branch  D. By looping itself around a stick

Câu 42: Which of the following is true of stick insects?

Michael’s friend, Winston Chen, however, is not so lucky. Although both his parents are successful musicians, they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as successful as they are and so they enter him in every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when he does not win. “ when I was your age, I used to win every competition I enter,” Winton’s father tells him. Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he always seems quiet and unhappy.

A striking feature of Viet Nam’s remarkable progress over the last few decades is the rapid pace of urbanisation. In 1986, there were fewer than there are 30 million urban residents. Today there are 30 million. Cities have become strong growth forces, with urban areas growing twice as fast as the national average rate, and contributing over half of the country’s gross domestic product.

Viet Nam needs to reshape its urbanization process to create more efficient cities - cities that have sufficient population densities are well connected internally and regionally, and well managed. In addition, in line with Viet Nam's strong preference for social equity, cities will need to ensure inclusion of all residents, with no groups or area “left behind."

Meanwhile, rural residents increasingly lag behind their urban counterparts in income and access to services, leading many to migrate to cities. Migration presents challenges for urban management but also opportunities to enhance labor mobility. Fortunately, these trends can be reversed.

For example, four years ago, Alley 76 in Binh Thanh district, Ho Chi Minh City was only narrow enough for one motorbike to get through. Store owner Bui Thi Mai knows how a clean and efficient city can make or break a business. When it rained, the alley was often flooded with floating garbage and mosquitoes. Crime was increasing. Today, after undergoing major upgrading under an urban renewal project, the street is cleaner, safer and trucks carry goods to her door. Her family income has soared and her life has been completely changed.

B. population of cities accounts for the majority of the country's

39. The responsibility of city authorities is _______.

Everybody loves the giant panda. That was clear from the enthusiastic welcome New Yorkers gave to Ling Ling and Yong Yong when they arrive at the Bronx Zoo in May. The cuddy black-and white pair were on loan for six months from China’s Beijing Zoo, and it was estimated that more than 1 million people visited them in New York before they left for a zoo in Tampa, Florida in early November.

The giant panda, unfortunately, is an endangered species. Only about 700 are left in the wild, most of them living on reserves in China’s Sichuan Province. Despite conservation efforts on the part of the Chinese government and scientists worldwide, the population continues to decline as human beings cut down bamboo, the panda’s primary food.

Can the panda be saved? Of course. All it needs is bamboo and peace. Every panda population should have at least two bamboo species available to lessen the impact of a die-off. Bamboo at low elevations must be preserved or replanted. Existing reserves need to be expanded and new reserves created. Poaching must be controlled. Zoos must improve captive breeding to provide more pandas for their original home.

China’s Ministry of Forestry and the World Wildlife Fund are continuing their collaborative effort on the panda’s behalf, guided by the spirit of their joint agreement that reads: “The giant panda is not only the precious property of the Chinese people, but also a precious natural heritage of concern to people all over the world. ”

42. Pandas are in danger because of food shortage.

44. Zoos are useful in breeding more pandas to send back to the wild.

45. The panda is a natural heritage of China and the whole world.

Part 1: Choose the best answer to fill in each of the blanks in the text below. (1.0 p)

Nowadays people are more aware that wildlife all over the world is in (1) __________. Many species  of animals are threatened, and will easily become extinct if we do not make aneffort to (2) __________them. There are many reasons for this. Animals are hunted for their fur or for other valuable parts of their bodies. Some birds, such as parrots, are caught and sold as pets.

For many animals and birds, the problem is that their (3) __________ – the place where they live – is disappearing. More land is used for farms, for houses or industry. Farmers (4) __________ powerful chemicals to help them grow better crops, but these chemicals pollute the environment and harm wildlife. The most successful animals on earth – human beings – will soon be the only ones left unless we can solve this problem.

1. A. danger

C. problem

D. vanishing

2. A. harm

C. used

D. don't use

Part 2: Read the passage and answer the questions:

Alice Walker has written book of poetry and short stories, a biography, and several novels.  She is  probably best known for her novel The Color Purple, published in 1982. The book vividly narrates  the richness and complexity of black people – especially black women – in Georgia in the 1920s and  1930s. Although the novel came under bitter attack by certain critics and readers, it was applauded by others and won both the American Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. It became a bestseller, selling over 4 million copies, and it was made into a successful film by noted director Steven Spielberg. The novel reveals horror, drudgery, and joy of black life in rural Georgia. It gets much of its special flavor from its use of the words, rhythm, and grammar of Black English and from its epistolary style. Telling a story through letters was a narrative structure commonly used by eighteen-century novelists, but it is not

often used in contemporary fiction. Unlike most epistolary novels, which have the effect of distancing the reader from the events described by the letter writer,  The Colour Purple used the letter form  to draw the reader into absolute intimacy with the poor, uneducated, but wonderfully observant Celia, like William Faulkner' character Dilsey, does not simply survive, but prevails.

1. What kinds of books has Alice Walker written?

2. When was the novel The Color Purple published?

3. Was the book made into a film?

4. How many copies were sold at that time?

32. Many people are afraid (A) that in the future there will be (B) no space leaving (C) for human  beings and they express the idea of robots replacing (D) human beings.

33. Human beings enjoy their life with more and more (A) progress of science and technological (B), but it is also very necessary (C) to think more about the problems that modern machines and devices (D) may cause.

Read the passage carefully and choose the correct answer.

Consider activities that most take for granted, particularly those who live in industrialized nations: drinking a glass of water; driving a car or traveling by mass transportation; living in a decent house or apartment; using modern household appliances; using tools to build, fix and repair; even breathing fresh air. These activities improve our quality of life. Have you considered that to do all of the above requires the availability of natural resources, whether used as raw materials or in finished products?

The United Nations predicts that the global population will increase from the present 6. 65 billion to 7. 95 billion by the year 2025. At the same time, the world is becoming more prosperous. The average person is consuming more food, water, energy and metals. Multiple millions in nations that were once poor are now moving into the middle class. They are driving cars, acquiring household appliances, using electronic gadgets and adopting high-protein diets, similar to Western industrialized nations. The subject of natural resources has been in the news for years. The media has long reported that the world's supply of oil, minerals, fresh water, and lumber are in danger of running out. Yet very few people take this seriously.

Within the next 50 years, the world's population is projected to rise by 40%.  This growth, coupled  with  increasing industrialization and urbanization, will result in greater demand for water. Water will become much scarcer. The United Nations figures suggest that there are   around 300 potential conflicts  over water all over the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about one-sixth  of the world's  population  lacks access to clean water,  while 40% are without access  to proper  sanitation services.

36. Which future problems are referred in the text?

c. household appliances and food d. cars and tools

37. The first paragraph means that _______.

a. all things that make our lives convenient and comfortable need natural resources

b. people who live in industrialized countries travel everywhere by car

c. people can enjoy more and more fresh air in the future

d. we need more finished products than raw materials

38. According to the second paragraph, _______.

a. population will decrease b. many people will become poorer

c. people use more food and energy d. there will be no poor people

39. Natural resources _______.

a. will never be used up

b. have not ever been mentioned by the media

c. have been the subject of the media for many years

a. industrialization and urbanization have greater demand for water

b. clean water is always available for everybody all the -time

c. we will find more and more sources of safe water

d. everybody on earth :will be supplied enough safe water in the future

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the  correct answer  to  each of the questions.

Millions of people are using cellphones today. In many places, it is actually considered  unusual not to  use one. In many countries,  cellphones are very popular with young people.  They find that the  phones  are more than a means of communication  - having a mobile phone  shows that they are  cool and  connected.

The explosion in mobile phone use around the world has made some health professional worried. Somedoctors are concerned that in the future many people may suffer  health problems from the use  of mobile phones. In England, there has been a serious debate  about this issue. Mobile phone  companies are worried about the negative publicity of such  ideas. They say that there is  no proof that mobile phones are bad for your health.

On the other hand, medical studies have shown changes in the brain cells of some people who use  mobile phones. Signs of change in the tissues of the brain and head can be detected with modern  scanning equipment. In one case, a traveling salesman had  to retire at young age because  of serious  memory loss. He couldn't remember even simple tasks. He would often forget the  name of his own son. This man used to talk on his mobile phone for about six hours a day, every day of his working  week,    for a couple of years.  His family doctor blamed his  mobile phone use, but  his employer's  doctor didn't agree.

What is it that makes mobile phones potentially harmful? The answer is radiation. High-tech machines  can detect very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones. Mobile phone  companies agree that there is  some radiation, but they say the amount is too small to worry about.  As the discussion  about their safety continues, it appears that it's best to use mobile phones less often.

Millions of people are using cell phones today. In many places, it is actually considered unusual not to use one. In many countries, cell phones are very popular with young people. They find that the phones are more than a means of communication - having a mobile phone shows that they are cool and connected.

The explosion in mobile phone use around the world has made some health professionals worried. Some doctors are concerned that in the future many people may suffer health problems from the use of mobile phones. In England, there has been a serious debate about his issue.

In one case, a travelling salesman had to retire at young age because of serious memory loss. High- tech machines can detect very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones. Mobile phone companies agree that there is some radiation, but they say the amount is too small to worry about.

As the discussion about their safety continues, it appears that it's best to use mobile phones less often. Use your regular phone if you want to talk for a long time. Use your mobile phone only when you really need it. Mobile phones can be very useful and convenient, especially in emergencies. In the future, mobile phones may have a warning label that says they are bad for your health. So for now, it's wise not to use your mobile phone too often

Question 31: According to the passage, cell phones are especially popular with young people because

A. they keep the users alert all the time.s

B. they are indispensable in everyday communications.s

C. they make them look more stylish.s

D. they cannot be replaced by regular phones.s

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

It has long been seen as a less romantic way of meeting Mr Right. But finding love over the Internet is a good way of meeting a marriage partner, research has showed. It found that one in five of those who have used dating sites to find their perfect partner have gone on to marry someone they met over the web. The study, by consumer group Which?, also revealed that more than half of the 1,504 people questioned had been on a date with someone they met in cyberspace. Sixty-two per cent agreed that it was easier to meet someone on a dating site than in other ways, such as in a pub or club, or through friends. At the same time, the under35s were more likely to know someone who had been on a date or had a long-term relationship with someone they met through online dating. The survey also found that Match.com and Dating Direct were the most popular dating websites.

Jess Ross, editor of which.co.uk, said: “Online dating is revolutionising the way people meet each other. Switching the computer on could be the first step to success.” According to industry surveys, more than 22 million people visited dating websites in 2007, and more than two million Britons are signed up to singles sites. Previous research has shown that couples who get to know each other via emails are more likely to see each other again after their first date. Two years ago, a study by Bath University revealed that those who met on dating websites were 94 per cent more likely to see each other after their first meeting than other couples. The researchers studied relationships formed on online dating website Match.com over a six-month period. They found that consummate love - described as a balance of passion, intimacy and commitment - was evident at around 12 months into a relationship. Of the 147 couples who took part in the study, 61 per cent said their relationships had high levels of these components. The researchers also found that men were more likely to find true love on the Internet than women. Some 67 per cent of men but just 57 per cent of women said they had experienced consummate love with an online partner.

Companionate love - a relationship with high levels of intimacy and commitment, but lower levels of passion - was the next most frequently experienced form of love, exhibited by 16 per cent of the study group. Dr Jeff Gavin, who led the team, said: “To date, there has been no systematic study of love in the context-of relationships formed via online dating sites. But with the popularity of online dating, it is imperative we understand the factors that influence satisfaction in relationships formed in this way.” Charlotte Harper, of Match.com, said: “We were thrilled to find so many of our former members have found love. It supports our belief that the Internet does in fact encourage old-fashioned courtship.”

31. According to the passage, online dating is seen as ____.

A. a modern romantic way of dating

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions from 1 to 5

If parents bring up a child with the aim of turning the child into a genius, they will cause great damage to him. According to several leading educational psychologists, this is one of the biggest mistakes which some parents make. Generally, the child will understand very well what the parents expect, and will fail. Unrealistic parental expectations can cause great damage to the children.

However, if parents are not unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are hopeful in a sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well especially if the parents are very supportive of their children.

Michael Smiths is very lucky. He is very fond of music, and his parents help him a lot by taking him to concerts and arranging private piano and violin lessons. Although Michael's father plays the trumpet in a large orchestra, he never makes Michael enter music competitions if the is unwilling.

Michael's friend, Winston Maier, however, is not so lucky. As both his parents are successful musicians, they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as successful as they are, and so they enter him in every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when he does not win. "When I was at your age, I used to win every competition I entered," Winston's father tells him. Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he always seems quiet and unhappy.

Question 1: The main idea of the passage is ________.

A. how parents should bring up a child

B. how parents should make a child a musician.

A. his parents help him in a sensible way

B. his father is a musician in an orchestra

C. his family is rich enough to have a car

D. he is free to do anything that he likes best

Question 3: Winston's parents set so high a standard for him that________.

A. he has to do his best to do everything

B. he is afraid that he may disappoint them

C. he has made great progress in music

D. he often wants to kill himself some day

Question 4: It is one of parents' mistakes if________

A. they don’t care for their child's education much.

B. they want their child to be a musician.

C. they help their child to win music competitions .

D. they make their child try to achieve too much.

Question 5: According to the author's opinion, ________.

A. unrealistic parents should arrange private lessons for their children

B. all sensible parents can train their children to succeed in everything.

C. it is unimportant to let the child develop in the way they want.

D. parents should be supportive of their children.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions from 6 to 10

WEDDING CUSTOMS

In many countries, it is customary for the bride to wear a white dress as a symbol of purity. In traditional Japanese wedding ceremonies, the bride wears a white kimono. The tradition of wearing a special white dress only for the wedding ceremony started around 150 years ago. Before that, most women could not afford to buy a dress that they would only wear once. In different countries, colors other than white are worn by the bride or used as part of the wedding ceremony. In certain Asian countries and in the Middle East, red and orange are considered symbols of joy and happiness. In Chinese cultures, wedding invitations are usually red and gold as these are colors symbolic of wealth and happiness. Wedding guests give gifts of money to the newlyweds in small red envelopes. Not all cultures, though, consider money a suitable gift. In many Western countries, especially the U.K, wedding guests give the bride and groom household items that they may need for their new home.

In many cultures, couples exchange rings, usually made of gold or silver, during the marriage ceremony. The circular shape of the ring is symbolic of the couple's eternal union. In Brazil, it is traditional to have the rings engraved, with the bride's name on the groom's ring, and vice versa.

Many wedding customs that originated in one part of the world have been incorporated into marriage ceremonies in other countries. Today, couples can choose from many of the world's traditional customs to create their own special ceremony.

The body language people use often communicates more about their feelings than the words they are saying. We use body movements, hand gestures, facial expressions, and changes in our voice to communicate with each other. Although some body language is universal, many gestures are culturally specific and may mean different things in different countries.

If you want to give someone the nod in Bulgaria, you have to nod your head to say no and shake it to say yes – the exact opposite of what we do! In Belgium, pointing with your index finger or snapping your fingers at someone is very rude.

In France, you shouldn’t rest your feet on tables or chairs. Speaking to someone with your hands in your pockets will only make matters worse. In the Middle East, you should never show the soles of your feet or shoes to others as it will be seen as a grave insult. When eating, only use your right hand because they use their left hands when going to the bathroom. In Bangladesh, the ‘thumbs-up’ is a rude sign. In Myanmar, people greet each other by clapping, and in India, whistling in public is considered rude.

In Japan, you should not blow your nose in public, but you can burp at the end of a meal to show that you have enjoyed it. The ‘OK’ sign (thumb and index finger forming a circle) means ‘everything is good’ in the West, but in China it means nothing or zero. In Japan, it means money, and in the Middle East, it is a rude gesture.
