1. Cách sử dụng in, on, at

a. Ví dụ so sánh giới từ at, on, in (chỉ thời gian) trong tiếng Anh

Khi được sử dụng để chỉ thời gian:

·        Giới từ in đứng trước những từ chỉ thời gian khái quát nhất như thế kỷ, tương lai, năm, tháng, mùa, tuần, sáng, chiều, tối, ...

·        Giới từ on đứng trước những từ chỉ ngày/dịp cụ thể nào đó.

·        Giới từ at đứng trước những từ chỉ cột mốc thời gian, thời điểm, khoảnh khắc.

Ví dụ:

- They arrived at 5 o'cock.

(Họ đã tới nơi lúc 5 giờ.)

- They arrived on Friday.

(Họ đã tới hôm thứ sáu.)

- They arrived in October. / They arrived in 1968.

(Họ đã tới vào tháng mười. / Họ đã tới vào năm 1968.)

·        at với thời gian trong ngày:

at 5 o'clock at 11.45

at midnight at lunchtime

at sunset ...

·        on với ngày tháng, các ngày đặc biệt, ngày trong tuần:

on Friday on 12 March 1994

on Christmas Day on my birthday

·        in với những khoảng thời gian lớn hơn (chẳng hạn months/years/seasons):

in October in 1968

in the 18th century in the past

in(the)winter in the 1970s

in the Middle Ages in (the) future

b. Giới từ at trong các thành ngữ

Ta sử dụng giới từ at trong các thành ngữ sau:

at night	- I don't like going out at night. (Tôi không thích ra ngoài ban đêm.)
at the weekend/at weekends	- Will you be here at the weekend? (Bạn sẽ ở đây vào kỳ nghỉ cuối tuần chứ?)
at Christmas	- Do you give each other presents at Christmas? (Bạn có tặng quà mọi người dịp Giáng sinh không?)
at the moment/at present	- Mr Benn is busy at the moment / at present. (Vào lúc này ông Benn đang bận.)
at the same time	- Liz and I arrived at the same time. (Liz và tôi tới nơi cùng một lúc.)

Chú ý rằng chúng ta thường sử dụng câu hỏi What time ...? (còn At what time ít được dùng):

- What time are you going out this evening?

(Tối nay bạn sẽ đi chơi lúc mấy giờ?)

c. Giới từ in, on trong các thành ngữ

Giới từ in	Giới từ on
in the morning(s) in the afternoon(s) in the evening(s) - I'll see you in the morning. (Tôi sẽ gặp anh vào buổi sáng.) - Do you work in the evening? (Anh có làm việc vào buổi sáng không?)	on Friday morning(s) on Sunday afternoon(s) on Monday evening(s) - I'll be at home on Friday morning. (Tôi sẽ có nhà sáng thứ sáu.) - Do you usually go out on Saturday evening? (Bạn thường đi chơi vào tối thứ bảy à?)

d. Không sử dụng giới từ at/in/on trước last/this/every

Chúng ta không sử dụng các giới từ at, in, on trước các từ last, this, every. Ví dụ:

- I'll see you next Friday. (không nói 'on next Friday')

(Tôi sẽ gặp anh vào thứ sáu tới.)

- They got married last March.

(Họ đã cưới nhau tháng ba vừa rồi.)

e. In a few minutes/in a six months/...

In a few minutes / in six months, ... = một thời điểm trong tương lai

- The train will be leaving in a few minutes. (= a few minutes from now)

(Ít phút nữa tàu sẽ khởi hành. (= ít phút nữa tính từ lúc này))

- Jack has gone away. He'll be back in a week. (= a week from now)

(Jack đi vắng rồi. Một tuần nữa anh ấy sẽ quay về. (= một tuần nữa tính từ lúc này))

Bạn cũng có thể nói "in six months' time", "in a week's time", ...

- They're getting married in six months' time. (hoặc ...in six months.)

(Sáu tháng nữa họ sẽ tổ chức đám cưới.)

Ta còn có thể dùng in... để nói rằng cần một khoảng thời gian bao lâu để làm một việc nào đó:

- I learnt to drive in four weeks. (= It took me four weeks to learn)

(Tôi đã học lái xe mất 4 tuần. (= tôi cần 4 tuần để học)
