Bad weather
Lisa
I live in the north of Finland. We’re used to snow there, but one year we had a very bad snowstorm. When we woke up one morning the snow was nearly as high as the house. It covered our car and our garden, and we couldn’t open our front door. We didn’t have any electricity, and it was dark and cold. Luckily, we were prepared, and we had a radio with batteries, a torch and warm clothes. For me it was like an adventure, but my mum and dad were very worried.
Hannah
My family and I often go sailing, but last summer we had a bad experience. The day began well. It was a hot and sunny so we decided to take the boat out. An hour later the weather changed very suddenly. The wind became stronger, clouds covered the sun, it started to rain and the sea became very rough. I thought we were going to die. Luckily, after a few hours the storm passed, but it was the scariest day of my life.
Paula
My village is near the sea, and a few winters ago something very strange happened. The wind became very strong and big waves started crashing over the harbour edge onto the road. Overnight, the temperature dropped so low that the seawater turned into ice. The next day the sea looked like a giant ice rink. There was also ice on the roads and the cars. Luckily nobody was hurt, but it was the strangest weather I’ve ever experienced.

III. READING
Task 1. Read the passage and write the answer True or False. (2,5 points)
Modem cinema audiences expect to see plenty of thrilling scenes in actions films. These scenes, which are known as “stunts”, are usually performed by stuntmen who are specially trained to do dangerous things safely. Anyone can crash a car, but if you are shooting a film, you have to be extremely precise, sometimes stopping right in front of the camera and the film crew.
At an early stage of the production, an expert stuntman is called in to work out the action scenes and form a team. He is the only person who can go against the wishes of the director although he will usually only do this in the interests of safety.
Many famous actors like to do the dangerous parts themselves, which produces better shots, since stuntmen don’t have to work in for the actors. Actors like to become involved in all the important aspects of the characters they are playing, but without the recent progress in safety equipment, insurance companies would never let them take the risk. To do their own stunts, actors need to be good athletes, but they must also be sensible and know their limits. If they were to be hurt, the film would come to a sudden halt.
1. “Stunts” are risky and breath-taking scenes in action films.
2. All the stunts are performed by sophisticated stuntmen.
3 A stuntman has a duty to follow all the instructions from the director in action scenes.
4. Insurance companies aren’t willing to let famous actors perform stunts without safety equipment.
5. If an actor were to be hurt, the film would continue with a stuntman replacing him.
Task 2. Read the text and complete the summary with ONE or TWO WORDS/ NUMBERS ONLY.
Gliders in the storm
In February 2007, Ewa Wiśnierska, a German paraglider, was in Australia with other paragliders preparing for the World Championships. One morning, as they were getting ready to take off, they noticed a thunderstorm approaching. However, they decided to carry on. As the best paragliders, they were skilful enough to keep away from some dark clouds. Unfortunately, as the competitors took off, the weather quickly got worse. Despite Ewa's attempt to escape, two enormous clouds came together and trapped her. They pulled her up inside the storm like a leaf in the wind. She flew higher and higher. "It was dark and I could hear lightning all around me." She reached nearly 10,000 m, higher than the top of Mount Everest, and then lost consciousness. At that height, the temperature was about -40°C and there was very little oxygen. Death seemed certain. For forty minutes, Ewa was unconscious. Waking up, she was still inside the storm. It was dark, and hailstones as big as tennis balls were flying past. But fortunately, her glider, which was spinning above her head, was still in one piece. Eventually, Ewa came out of the storm cloud and landed safely near a small farm. When her team reached her, she was 60 km away from the place where she took off. She was weak and covered in ice - but alive! Ewa was the luckiest woman in the world. There's no logical reason why she survived. Ewa had frostbite on her ears and legs, but a few days later, she competed in the World Championships.
Summary:

III. READING
Task 1. Read the passage and write the answer True or False.
The world's forests are being consumed rapidly. Trees are cut down for paper and wood products, for cooking fuel, to clear land for development, and to expand farming areas. The land left behind is stripped not only of its trees, but the plants, animals, and insects that lived in that ecosystem as well. With no plant roots to hold it in place, valuable soil washes away with every rainfall and ends up in the rivers and streams upon which people depend for their water supply. In extreme cases, hundreds or thousands of people lose their homes or perish in landslides when deforested slopes become unstable.
Forests also play an important part in regulating global climate. Trees remove carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas, from the atmosphere, while cycling oxygen back into it. When trees are cut down, however, the CO2 is released again. It is estimated that up to 25% of the total amount of CO2 going into the atmosphere every year is released from trees being cut and burned. It's clear that protecting the world's forests is an important part of solving the global climate change problem.
1. To expand farming areas is one of the reasons for cutting down trees.
2. Soil washes away with rainfall due to no plant roots to hold it in place.
3. Forests make unnecessary contribution to regulating global climate.
4. Trees release carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas, to the atmosphere.
5. Cutting and burning trees produce O2 going into the atmosphere annually.
Task 2. Read the text and complete the summary with ONE or TWO WORDS ONLY.
Many people assume that video games have a negative effect on young people. A lot of time in front of a screen is bad for the mind and the body, and combat games cause concern because they contain violence. Newspapers often express the same opinion. However, according to a report in American Psychologist, playing video games can be good for children’s education, health and social skills. Video games can actually improve certain mental skills. Combat games, for example, teach players to think in three dimensions. This helps children with science, technology, engineering and maths. Other types of video game can have other positive effects. In 2013, research showed that children who play role-playing games get better grades at school than those who don’t play them. Other research showed that playing any video game improves children’s creativity. Quick and simple games like Angry Birds can improve players’ mood and prevent them from feeling anxious. The report also says that video games teach children how to react well to failure because players continually fail and try again. This makes them emotionally strong in real life. Video games can improve social skills too, the report says. More than 70% of gamers play with a friend, and many take part in online games, like Farmville, with millions of other people. The players learn how to lead a group, work together and make decisions. Overall, the report accepts that some video games can have negative effects, but reminds us that they can have benefits too.
Summary
Video games are (1)_________ to have a negative effect on young people because they are time-consuming and violent. However, a (2)__________ shows that video games can actually improve certain mental skills. Video games helps children with science, technology, engineering and maths. Different types of video game can result in various positive effects. In (3)___________, research showed that playing video games can help children improve schoolwork, (4)__________________, mood, social skills and leadership. Overall, the report accepts that some video games can have negative effects, but reminds us that they can have (5)___________ too.
