Once a poor famer had a daughter named Little Pea. After his wife died, the farmer married again. His new wife had a daughter, Stout Nut. Unfortunately, the new wife was very cruel to Little Pea because she wasn’t her daughter. Little Pea had to do chores all day. This made Little Pea father very upset. He soon died of a broken heart.

Summer came and went. As a tradition, in the fall, the village held its harvest festival. That year, everyone was very excited as the prince wanted to choose his wife from the village. Stout Nut's mother made new clothes for her, but poor Little Pea had none.

However, before the festival started, a fairy appeared and magically changed Little Pea's rags into beautiful clothes.

Disadvantages of Festivals

Although people love festivals very much, there are also some disadvantages. First, festivals are very costly. MY VILLAGE

We are the Khmer Krom, one of the biggest ethnic groups in the south of Viet Nam. We live on farming – mostly rice – and fishing on the Mekong River. Life is sometimes hard as our work depends heavily on the weather. When it is not harvest time, the men of the village go fishing from early morning and don’t return until late afternoon. By the time they return, most of the village women will be waiting for them on the river bank. The dragon dance and the lion dance was originated from China, and it has been introduced to many parts of the world. The dragon dance and lion dance are also popular in some traditional festivals in Vietnam. Dragons symbolize wisdom, power and wealth, and they are believed to bring good luck to people. The origin of the dragon dance can be dated back to the Han Dunasty (206 BC – 220 AD). It was then used in a ceremony for worshiping ancestors and praying for rain, and it gradually developed into an entertainment activity. Ethnic Groups

Vietnam is a multi – nationality country with 54 ethnic groups. The Viet (Kinh) people account for 87% of the country’s population and mainly inhabit the Red River delta, the central coastal delta, the Mekong delta and major cities. The other 53 ethnic minority groups, totaling over 8 million people, are scattered over mountain areas (covering two – thirds of the country’s territory) spreading from the North to the South.
