Bài tập Because – Because of, Although – Despite – In spite of (40 câu)

1. Phân biệt nhanh hai cặp liên từ – giới từ

Nghĩa	+ Mệnh đề (S + V)	+ Danh từ / cụm danh từ / V-ing
Chỉ nguyên nhân (vì, bởi vì)	because, since, as	because of, due to, owing to
Chỉ sự nhượng bộ (mặc dù)	although, though, even though	despite, in spite of

Mẹo nhớ: những từ có chữ “of” ở cuối (because of, in spite of) hoặc là giới từ (despite) thì phía sau không thể là một mệnh đề đầy đủ.

• Because it rained, we stayed in. → Because of the rain, we stayed in.
• Although it rained, we went out. → Despite the rain, we went out.

Lưu ý: “Despite” không đi với “of”. Dạng “despite of” là sai, chỉ có “despite” hoặc “in spite of”.

2. Các bước chuyển mệnh đề thành cụm từ

Dù chuyển because → because of hay although → despite/in spite of, em đều làm theo cùng một quy trình. Hãy nhìn vào phần mệnh đề phía sau liên từ và xử lý theo thứ tự sau.

1. Bỏ “there is/was” và động từ to be nếu còn lại danh từ: Because there was a storm → Because of the storm.
2. Có danh từ + tính từ: đưa tính từ lên trước danh từ: Although the wind was strong → Despite the strong wind.
3. Chỉ có tính từ (chủ ngữ là “it”): đổi tính từ thành danh từ: Because it was foggy → Because of the fog.
4. Hai chủ ngữ giống nhau: bỏ chủ ngữ ở mệnh đề phụ, động từ thêm -ing (to be → being): Although she was tired, she kept working → Despite being tired, she kept working.
5. Hai chủ ngữ khác nhau mà có sở hữu: dùng tính từ sở hữu + danh từ: Because he behaved rudely → Because of his rude behaviour (trạng từ đổi thành tính từ).
6. Bí quá: thêm “the fact that” trước mệnh đề: Despite the fact that he was tired, … Cách này luôn đúng nhưng dài, nên dùng làm phương án cuối.

Thì quá khứ và bị động

• Hành động xảy ra trước: Although he had studied hard → Despite having studied hard.
• Bị động: Although he was punished → Despite being punished.

3. Lỗi sai thường gặp

• Because of + mệnh đề: “Because of it rained” là sai. Phải là “Because it rained” hoặc “Because of the rain”.
• Despite of: chỉ dùng “despite” hoặc “in spite of”.
• Dùng “but” cùng “although”: “Although it rained, but we went out” là sai. Tiếng Anh chỉ dùng một từ nối cho mỗi quan hệ.
• Giữ chủ ngữ khác nhau mà vẫn dùng V-ing: “Because of being tired, the bed looked comfortable” làm sai nghĩa vì “being tired” bị gán nhầm cho “the bed”. Khi chủ ngữ khác nhau, hãy dùng cụm danh từ có sở hữu hoặc “the fact that”.
• Quên đổi trạng từ thành tính từ: “because of his behaving rudely” không sai hẳn, nhưng gọn hơn là “because of his rude behaviour”.

Dạng A. Chọn because hoặc because of (10 câu)

Viết lại câu bằng because hoặc although (tuỳ nghĩa), giữ nguyên ý.

6. Cách học hiệu quả

• Trước khi viết, gạch chân chủ ngữ của hai vế. Nếu trùng nhau, ưu tiên dùng V-ing.
• Đọc lại câu mới và hỏi: “Phía sau because of/despite có phải danh từ hoặc V-ing không?”
• Khi gặp tính từ đứng một mình, hãy tìm danh từ cùng gốc rồi mới viết.
• Làm xong, thử chuyển ngược lại để kiểm tra mình đã hiểu cấu trúc chưa (như dạng D).

Because of và Because khác nhau thế nào?

Because là liên từ, theo sau là một mệnh đề có chủ ngữ và động từ. Because of là giới từ kép, theo sau là danh từ, cụm danh từ hoặc V-ing. Ví dụ: because it rained / because of the rain.

Despite và In spite of có thể thay thế cho nhau không?

Có. Hai cụm này cùng nghĩa 'mặc dù' và cùng đi với danh từ hoặc V-ing. Chỉ lưu ý 'in spite of' có 'of' còn 'despite' thì không (không viết despite of).

Có thể dùng Despite + mệnh đề không?

Không dùng trực tiếp. Muốn dùng mệnh đề thì thêm 'the fact that': Despite the fact that he was tired, he finished the report. Cách này tương đương với 'Although he was tired'.

Khi nào được dùng V-ing sau Because of và Despite?

Khi hai vế có cùng chủ ngữ. Ta bỏ chủ ngữ ở vế phụ và đổi động từ thành V-ing, to be thành being. Ví dụ: Although she was tired, she kept working → Despite being tired, she kept working.
